USD 259 DODGE LITERACY MAGNET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
4801 West 2nd Street North | Wichita | Design/Bid/Build with SPT Architecture
In 2008, USD 259 passed a $170-million bond issue. Several schools received extensive upgrades and remodeling from the budget. Dodge Literacy Magnet Elementary School was the first completely new school to be constructed. Simpson Construction Services was hired on a bid build contract to complete the 64,194-square-foot school with integral FEMA shelter just steps away from the existing facility. Simpson also demolished the existing school to build a parking lot and playground.
Environmentally-friendly attributes were used to maximize resources. The building is equipped with a 4-pipe hydronics heating and cooling system which drastically improves efficiency and temperature comfort. Automatic lighting helps the district control electrical costs. Plumbing fixtures with high efficient valves and sensors minimize utility waste.
Distinctive architectural and structural features were used throughout the school. Brightly painted walls, high ceilings, exposed brick and polished concrete floors provide a fun, welcoming learning environment for children ages 5-11. Incorporating exterior sunshades on the classroom window and clearstory windows throughout the main hallway emphasizes natural sunlight throughout the school.
