DERBY RECREATION CENTER RENOVATIONS
801 East Market | Derby | Design/Bid/Build with SJCF Architecture
To accommodate a growing member base and shifted emphasis to daily use activities, the Derby Recreation Commission decided to repurpose existing space instead of adding to their facility.
Originally built in 1986 with an addition in 1994, the facility needed heavy updating to truly convert it from a community center to a recreation center. Offices and meeting rooms for large events were no longer a priority, instead the fitness area was doubled. Three program studios were built to allow simultaneous use for adult fitness classes, youth dance classes and yoga. Major facelifts in the locker rooms, offices, indoor pool, nursery and façade completed the renovation.
The center did not close during construction and the daily challenge of keeping members safe was priority. Simpson Construction Services created a phased approach which temporarily closed one area for remodeling, while keeping others open, so activities could proceed as scheduled. Constant communication, redirected activities and temporary entry points kept the job on track.
